Default 97 Gmc Sierra Whipple shredding belts!!! Please help!!!

I Just bought this truck 2 days ago and noticed the supercharger belt was frayed and missing ribs. So I went to autozone and got the closest belt I could find. It seemed a little long so I adjusted the idler pully olmost all the way up and it seemed pretty tight when the tensioner was applied. Well it chewed 2 ribs off the new belt and is now trying to skip the belt back and forth on the supercharger pully. I'm not sure if I just need to get a shorter belt and get more tention on it or what? Not sure how tight it should be? I also noticed the supercharger pulley dosent seem to have a lip like the front of the pulley does to keep it on track. Every thing seems to be lined up pretty darn straight. Do I need a special belt? Any help would b greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance Guys

It is possible the alignment isn't exactly right. When I had my Vortec 350 kit a shim was needed behind the compressor pulley to make the alignment right. This cannot be checked visually, you'll need a metal straight edge. To check the alignment the straight edge across the previously driven pulley with the belt on and measure the distance between the belt and the straightedge. Repeat for the compressor pulley.
The belt should be the smallest possible that will fit. Under load the belt stretches. If getting the belt on is a fight and a half it's probably the right size.
The only belt that ever survived satisfactorily for mine were Dayco Polycogs. Goodyear Gatorbacks grip too but stretch far too much and rip.

Thanks for the info! I must need a smaller belt! It was easy to put on lol. It is just a cheap autozone belt its still in one piece but shredded a couple ribs off.

I adjusted the idler pulley all the way up ands it seem to be getting better, not fraying and staying pretty straight. I still think I could use a shorter belt. Is there such a thing as too tight of a belt?
